This is my life. My perspective on all things yooper. My opinions. My experiences. Because this, this beautiful, cold, snowy, mosquito infested little piece of heaven up here is where I will be the rest of my life, Lord help me. I will never BE a Yooper. I will leave that to the professionals. But I am madly in love with one, so I have to learn to live in their territory. Some days are breathtaking and some days those breaths are full of swear words...if you get offended, go back South.

Lunch at the Lake
I got to Marquette early today, not really planned, went and saw Tony for lunch. I like to do that sometimes. Go say hi. Give him smooches at lunch. Went to 2 job interviews, they went well. Grabbed lunch at LSP - Lake Superior Pizza. It is this little tiny building on Lincoln Ave - you walk in and there is a very small counter. No place to sit, you just order. They have AMAZING pizza rolls. Think of Tostinos Pizza Rolls, life size, like hot pocket/sandwich sized, and tasting much better. They are full of ooey gooey cheesy deliciousness. I stopped there for lunch, grabbed a turkey breast sub instead - trying to consciously watch what I eat and also since I drop everything when I eat, did not want to get pizza sauce on my blouse before heading to the second interview. I went to the Lake to eat, out by Rip Tide Rock. There were the usual people there sitting in the parking lot. I wonder what they do in their cars. Some read. Some may write, like I do. Some - a lot - are on their phones. Some just sit and think. I do that out there a lot. The lake was still today, yet the waterbed like smoothness made her very alive, just rippling. The current was strong. The flags were up, warning the public that the waters were closed for their access. The buoys were bobbing around crazy, like someone doing the Yooper Mosquito Dance - this way and that way...up and down, side to side...They reminded me of life-sized bobbers floating on a giant pond.... It's a good thing the waters were closed because I am pretty sure the lake was probably 30 degrees. I could be off but it sounds good. Lake Superior is very, very cold. The garbage geese were plentiful - swooping and diving - nosing around the parking lot, hoping for some poor sucker to toss out a morsel or scrap - DO NOT do that. Just FYI. My son and I learned at the beach in Two Rivers what feeding seagulls does. If you don't know, try it once. Guard yourselves. People get out of their cars to take pictures of the lake, daring to walk down on the rocks just a little bit. The birds squawk at them. One bird swoops down lower towards my car. Then lower. Then he lands. On my hood. -_- Really? you are going to try to stare me down as I eat my sandwich? His eye had a bright red ring around it. Very colorful. Windows closed. Before him and his laser beam eye decided to fly in my window and take a bite. I stared back. I took another bite while holding his gaze. I win. You are not getting my LSP sub. I feel like I am in a Stephen King version of The Birds. My lunch companion flew away before I could snap his picture and Facebook his ass. That's right. Go find your own sammich. Or a pasty or something. Can you imagine if you had wings and you could fly over Lake Superior? How amazing that would be.
I noticed there was a ship in at the Ore Dock so I turned on the car and headed that way. There is another parking lot right by the Ore Dock so I pulled in. The Kaye E. Barker was docked there. I wish I had a telescope so I could see everything up close and personal. There is where I would love to work. With the ships. I got to see the full production today. The giant arms coming down from the Ore Dock to the ship. They creaked and groaned - like a Transformer waking up. The giant shaft that looked like an elevator or something? Moving back and forth. And the iron ore, sliding, shooting down the arms into the ship. It was quite a site. Very neat how they do it. I noticed I was not the only interested person watching this. I looked at the clock, back out at the lake - time to go. As I turned the car around to shoot back up Lakeshore Drive - I saw the sky - a big dark raincloud coming in. A typical day up here. Rain over here, nothing over there.....
Til next time...
Keep your toes in the water and your ass in the sand.
